What it is
Format JSON started as a single formatter and grew into a workbench: format, validate, view and compare JSON, convert between JSON, XML, YAML, CSV and TOML, generate types for ten languages, and decode tokens. Every tool is a page of its own, and they share one engine, so behaviour is the same everywhere.
How it works
Each page loads the tool’s code into your browser. When you paste data, your device parses and processes it. Nothing is sent to a server, because there is no server step: the site is a set of static files on Cloudflare’s network.
A few choices that make the results trustworthy:
- Our own JSON parser. Error messages read the same in Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and point at the exact line and column.
- Exact numbers. Formatting works on the text, so 64-bit IDs keep every digit instead of being rounded by
JSON.parse. - Large files. The tree and table only draw what is on screen, so big documents stay responsive.
- Offline. After the first visit the site works without a connection and can be installed as an app.
Your data
Nothing you paste is uploaded or saved anywhere but your own browser. To spare you re-pasting, the last document in each format is kept in your browser’s local storage; Clear removes it. JSON Web Tokens are never stored. The privacy policy lists exactly what is kept and which analytics run.
