Terms of Service

Last updated: May 17, 2026

🔎 Short version: Format JSON is a free tool. Use it for lawful purposes. We provide it as-is, without warranties. The JSON you process never leaves your device.

1. About These Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") apply to your use of Format JSON, the website and web application available at https://format-json.net/ (referred to below as "the Service" or "the Site"). By visiting or using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Site.

We may revise these Terms from time to time. When we do, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page changes. Carrying on using the Site after a revision means you accept the updated Terms. We won't do anything drastic without good reason, but it's worth checking back occasionally.

2. What the Service Is

Format JSON is a browser-based developer utility. It lets you format, validate, minify, compare, and export JSON data, view JSON as a collapsible tree, generate code types from JSON schemas, and load JSON from files or URLs. Everything runs locally in your browser — no data you enter is transmitted to our servers.

The Site is provided free of charge. We don't require registration, and we don't store any account data because there are no accounts.

3. Acceptable Use

You may use the Service for any lawful purpose, personal or commercial, at no cost. The following is not permitted:

Honest everyday use — debugging API responses, building projects, learning JSON, formatting config files — is exactly what this tool is here for. We just ask that you don't abuse the infrastructure or use it to harm others.

4. Intellectual Property

4.1 Our Content

The source code, design, written content, and branding of Format JSON belong to their respective authors. The core application code is open source — you can find it on GitHub and use or modify it under the terms of its licence. However, the Format JSON name, domain, and brand are not licensed for reuse without permission.

4.2 Your Content

You own everything you paste or load into the tool. We don't claim any rights over your JSON data. As noted above, none of it ever reaches our servers, so there's no question of us storing or using it.

4.3 Third-Party Content

If you load JSON from a URL, you're responsible for making sure you have the right to access and process that data. We pass your URL request directly from your browser and have no visibility into what you're fetching.

5. No Warranties

Format JSON is provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranty of any kind — express, implied, or statutory. We don't guarantee the Site will be available at all times, error-free, or suitable for any particular purpose.

Specifically, and without limiting the above:

Developer tools sometimes have bugs. Use the output critically, especially in production environments.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Format JSON and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to data loss, lost profits, or business interruption, arising out of or in connection with your use of (or inability to use) the Service — even if we've been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If you're using this tool to process JSON for a critical production system, please test your output before deploying it. That's good practice regardless of which tool you use.

7. Third-Party Services

The Site uses Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for usage analytics, and is hosted on Cloudflare infrastructure. By using the Site, you acknowledge that these third-party services may collect limited technical data (such as page views and browser type) as described in our Privacy Policy.

We have no control over the content or availability of any external URL you choose to load via the tool. A link or URL load does not constitute an endorsement of the source.

8. External Links

The Site may contain links to external websites for reference purposes — such as the JSON specification, MDN documentation, or open-source repositories. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content, availability, or privacy practices. Clicking an external link is at your own discretion.

9. Availability and Modifications

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service (or any part of it) at any time, with or without notice. We can also change these Terms at any time; changes take effect when posted. We'd obviously prefer to keep things running smoothly and won't pull the plug without reason, but we can't make binding uptime guarantees for a free tool.

Feature requests and bug reports are welcome. Nothing in these Terms creates an obligation for us to implement any particular feature or fix.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Any disputes arising from your use of the Service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of competent jurisdiction. If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full force.

11. Severability and Entire Agreement

If any clause in these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, that clause will be limited or removed to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining Terms will remain in effect. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, represent the entire agreement between you and Format JSON regarding your use of the Service.
